New Century was founded by Jeffrey D. Modell in 1994.
Personal
He was born January 24, 1960, is married and has two children. Mr. Modell is a fourth-degree Black Belt (a "Sensei") in Isshinryu Karate. He teaches evening Karate classes to children two nights per week, and practices Hung Gar Gung Fu. He is a member of The Bay Harbor Yacht Club and the Bay Harbor Community Council. He is a member of the Investment Subcommittee of the Cranbrook Educational Community Board of Trustees and the Investment Committee of Temple Israel.
Occupation
Mr. Modell is President & Portfolio Manager of New Century Investment Management, Incorporated. He is also the Treasurer. He has held these positions since April, 1994. He assumed the additional positions of Chief Compliance Officer in May, 2004 and Anti-Money Laundering Compliance Officer in May, 2005. He is the head of the firm's Investment Committee.
His work has been published in the Journal of Pension Benefits, he has been interviewed by, and published in, Crain's Detroit Business, has been interviewed at length by The Wall Street Transcript, a journal read by investment professionals, profiled in Corporate Detroit, and authored the "Managing Your Money" column in the Detroit Legal News.
Prior Employment
Mr. Modell was self-employed as a private investor from 1983 until his engagement with New Century. His experience includes portfolio management, securities analysis and trading, mutual fund selection and portfolio creation, research on equities strategies, selection, supervision and review of independent investment advisors, and analysis, negotiation and funding of selected venture capital opportunities.
Mr. Modell is also an Attorney-at-Law admitted to the Michigan Bar in 1985 and the Washington D.C. Bar in 1986, although he no longer practices. Simultaneous with private investment activities, he has worked as a sole practitio ner, and been associated with the Detroit law firm Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn (1987-89) and the Washington D.C. law firm Ivins, Phillips & Barker Chartered (1985-87). His experience includes estate planning for complex estates, trusts, taxation, ERISA with emphasis on plan investments and fiduciary responsibility, due diligence and negotiation for investments, environmental law and general practice.
Education
Mr. Modell holds a Juris Doctor Magna Cum Laude from the University of Michigan Law School, Ann Arbor, Michigan (1985), where he was elected to The Order of the Coif and Contributing Editor of the Michigan Law Review. He has a Bachelor of Business Administration with High Distinction from the University of Michigan School of Business Administration, Ann Arbor, Michigan (1981). An Accounting Major, he was elected Vice President of the local chapter of Beta Alpha Psi, the national honorary accounting fraternity, and to Beta Gamma Sigma, the national honorary Business School society. He also passed the Uniform CPA Examination after graduation. As a prerequisite to the Business School program, he attended two years at the University of Michigan Honors College of Literature, Science and the Arts, Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he had Class Honors and was a Regents-Alumni Scholar. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from Detroit Country Day School High School, Birmingham, Michigan (1978).
NASD Series Examinations
Mr. Modell passed Exam Series 65, the Uniform Investment Adviser Law Examination conducted by the North American Securities Administrators Association (1995, and again in 2010).
